The Fish of Lake Erie, by Grace Klein

The Willoughby Arts Collaborative (WAC) is thrilled to announce the completion of a painted sidewalk mural at Osborne Park entitled The Fish of Lake Erie, by local Willoughby artist Grace Klein. We are grateful to the City of Willoughby for making this project possible!

Grace is a fourth generation of artist in the Stella’s Art Gallery family, and this marks her first public art installation. While her background is rooted in fiber arts, as an avid crocheter, she has expanded her creative practice into painting with bold success. Grace has earned a BA from The Ohio State University in Psychology with minors in Addiction/Substance Abuse and American Sign Language. She was also a student athlete and Big-10 Champion in women’s rowing. Grace is currently commuting to Youngstown State to finish her MA in hopes of becoming a school psychologist.

Grace’s vibrant mural celebrates the diverse fish species of Lake Erie in a striking pop art style. The design features iconic lake fish rendered in bright, eye-catching colors that command attention. Each fish is distinctively styled with exaggerated features and vivid hues against a contrasting background, creating a dynamic visual experience that brings the underwater ecosystem to street level. The composition suggests movement, as if the fish are swimming through the urban environment, connecting viewers to the natural heritage of Lake Erie. Some species are common to the lake, while others highlight ongoing conservation efforts–bringing attention to the ecological richness and environmental stewardship of our region.
This installation transforms an ordinary stretch of sidewalk into a celebration of Willoughby’s connection to Lake Erie. Grace reflected, "it was exciting to be able to create an installation for my community that represents the environment in a fun and vibrant way. Thank you to everyone who made it possible!"
Please come visit Grace’s mural at Osborne Park located along the split rail fence between the pool and pavilion area. WAC will be having an unveiling ceremony on September 13 at 2 pm, please join us! We are very proud of Grace’s work and excited for its addition to Willoughby’s art collection.
